Dustin Johnson’s decision to join the LIV Golf Series was a big one. The Saudi backed series has been facing an uphill battle ever since its inception. The sanctions, criticism and overall isolation does not seem to stop. Johnson however, seems to be content with his choices.
His wife Paulina Gretzky also supports Johnson whole heartedly, and believes that he made the best choice possible. “I don’t think Dustin would ever make a bad choice for his children, and people have to understand at the end of the day, that’s who he chose this for,” Gretzky explained.
Johnson has two sons, Tatum aged 8 and River aged 5. The reason why Johnson joined the LIV Series is so that he does not have to play so many events a year, and can spend time with his kids as well. The rounds are also with, with LIV Golf only having 54 holes, as compared to PGA’s 72.

However, the biggest reason for Johnson to join LIV was the prize money payouts. The guaranteed money means financial stability for golfers, and can be a big driving factor while accepting such offers. Johnson also spoke about why he made the move. “Of course, I get what everyone’s saying, but my dad being a hockey player – I’m sure as a kid, there were times when I’m like, ‘Why does my dad have to play on my birthday?’ This is about Dustin and the kids and me and taking care of us and being there with us.”
“I’ve had a wonderful career on the PGA Tour, and I’m very proud of it, and always will be,” Johnson added. “Obviously, now I’ve taken kind of a different step in my life and career.” Johnson is reported to have gotten over $125 million to make the switch to the LIV Golf Series.
To add to this, he has also made a whopping $35 million during the very first season of LIV. “The decision to join LIV finally just came down to the offer they made me. For me, it was playing less, making more money, pretty simple,” Johnson said. Whatever the reason for his switch, Johnson is still excited to play golf.
“I know that I’m one of the best golfers in the world,” Johnson said. “I think I’ve proven it over a long period of time. When I show up to a major, I mean, I’m there to win, and they can have their own opinion.” For Johnson, his reputation is set, and he does not need to prove anything to anyone.
