“It will be covered as ‘strategic alliance'”: Fans quick to criticise Lee Westwood after snarky comments about Jon Rahm, PGA Tour and its new series

Lee Westwood slams reporter on LIV question

The PGA Tour has decided to release its new series beginning from 2023. Spearheaded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, the Series will bring together the elite golfers of the world to play 20 tournaments as a ‘tour within a tour’ of the PGA. However, Lee Westwood is not impressed with the new series, saying that it was a copy of the LIV Golf Series.

World no. 6 Jon Rahm was asked about whether the 20 Elevated events from next year that the top 20 Players had to commit to was asking too much of the European players. “The what sorry?” was Jon’s surprising reply to the question that took him by surprise. It was then made clear to Rahm that he would have to play the rider cup as well. “We have to play all of them?” he asked.

Lee Westwood reposted the Tweet, and said in the caption: “I’m sure this will be covered in the ‘strategic alliance’ Jon.” The snarky comment received quite the replies to his tweet. This entailed much backlash and questions about Westwood’s not owning up for himself for joining the LIV Series.

The retweet saw Lee Westwood and Eddie Pepperell get into quite the tussle over expressing opinions on social media and that turned out to be quite an entertaining. People were quick to point out the hypocrisy, as Westwood left the PGA Tour for a controversial Saudi backed LIV Series, but did not care to address the money that he was taking.
