While Ryder Cup team captain Zach Johnson has been hush on the Ryder Cup team players, the team’s vice-captain Fred Couples confirmed three key names. While there are automatic qualifiers for the U.S. and Europe teams, the criteria to determine the qualifiers are different.

During a radio show, Couples accidentally slipped out the names of three players who’ll catch the Italy flight with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in September. Three spots among the 12 players’ names have already been occupied by past champions – Wyndham Clark, Brooks Koepka, and Brian Harman.

Moreover, Fred Couples confirmed the participation of Jordan Speith, Cameron Young, and Max Homa. He said that the players will definitely be “going to be in Italy” for the tournament. When asked about Keegan Bradley, Couples only said, “The rest is…I’m stopping”.

Apart from the already listed players, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele will take the final two spots, while the remaining spots are left debated. One player who was certain of his participation was Justin Thomas.

But unfortunately, Thomas failed to live up to the scorings, ultimately being out of contention. His performance failed to impress the Ryder Cup team captain Zach Johnson following the majors this year. His performance last week has also been low, as he admitted performing at his career lowest.

Scheffler was the first to confirm his name on the lofty list as he stated his experience at Wisconsin as something he’ll “never forget” and something he “can’t wait to replicate in September”. He confidently stated that he was ready to be at his best and help the team “bring the Ryder Cup back home to the United States”.

Names of – Rickie Fowler, Collin Morikawa, and the LIV Golf trio Dustin Johnson, Taylor Gooch, and Bryson DeChambeau are yet to be confirmed. Since the selection process is still going on, the final names will mostly be revealed by Johnson at the latest. Fans are eagerly waiting to check the 12-man squad as battles begin in September.

Team Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald stated that they are expecting “younger guys to step up and fill some of those holes” left by their senior players. It’ll be interesting to see top golfers go against each other in September’s massive battle.
