Fred Couples, a former Masters winner, has been vocal in his criticism of golfers who have joined the LIV Golf League, which is backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund. However, he has clarified his stance on the matter by stating that he does not have a problem with any of the players who have made the switch.
He did express his desire and said “I have no problem with any of them,” so that they refrain from speaking negatively about the tour he has been a part of for 43 years. Couples’ position highlights the tension that exists between traditional golf tours and the new LIV Golf League, which has been making waves in the golf world with its lucrative contracts and high-profile signings.
He only dislikes some of the negative comments that some of them have made about the PGA Tour after leaving. Couples played a practice round with Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Tom Kim on Monday, and despite Woods still limping after suffering serious injuries to his right leg, foot, and ankle in a car wreck outside Los Angeles in February 2021, Couples said Woods hit the ball really well.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on Monday, Couples referred to three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson as a “nutbag” and Spain’s Sergio Garcia as a “clown.”
Couples clarified that although he has no issues with any LIV tour members, he does not believe they should disparage the PGA Tour or anybody else. He wants them to play golf and enjoy it. Couples said that it bothers him when players criticize the PGA Tour, where he has invested 43 years.

While Couples made some harsh comments about certain LIV Golf League players, he explained that he has no issue or any kind of problem with anyone on the LIV tour, but just does not like it when they criticize the PGA Tour. He believes that they should play golf and enjoy it without criticizing others. Couples played a practice round with Woods, who is still recovering from his injuries, and said Woods hit the ball really well.
The champions’ dinner on Tuesday night is expected to be a great night of fun, and Couples expect nothing different from years past. The Masters, which starts on Thursday, is the first time that many LIV Golf League and PGA Tour members have competed in the same tournament since July 2021.
