“It’s a choice”: Greg Norman expresses disappointment over suspension of LIV Golf Series players by PGA Tour

The Saudi backed LIV Golf series has caused quite the controversy in the golf world recent, leaving a lot of tension amongst players of the game. The PGA Tour disappointed by the controversial LIV Series, and was said to be a break-away tour. The PGA went so far ahead as to threaten disciplinary action against any defectors. Among those who did decide to make the choice to switch were Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Kevin Na and Ian Poulter to name just a few.

Yet players like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods decided to stay on and loyal to the PGA Tour. Just before the LIV Golf series began, the PGA ended up indefinitely suspending 17 golfers that did make the switch. Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Series said that he was with the players, and he would fight for them to allow them to play freely. “We’re in it for a reason: to make golf and grow golf on a successful level and on behalf of the players, they’re independent contractors. Give them an opportunity to be able to expand their wealth at their choice,” he said according to foxnews.com.

Norman said that he studied the business plan of the LIV Series well before making the decision to join it.  “But also at the same time, maybe our platform is a little bit better because it gives them more time with their family, like there was Charl Schwartzel with his wife and kids. Their platform gives them that opportunity and it is a choice. It’s not a break-away tour,” he said.

“It’s a choice. The players have a choice to play with us and to continue on playing with the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour or the Japanese tour or whatever other tour.” Norman maintains that he went into the LIV Series because golf is for the good of all. For him, golf is good for the world, golf is good for the Saudis, and that growth is seen to be extremely impressive.
