“Just expect to be treated fairly” – Henrik Stenson seeks clarity on future as he “makes every arrangement possible” to fulfill Ryder cup captaincy duties

When Henrik Stenson took over as captain of the European Ryder Cup earlier this year, he repeatedly assured him not to move to LIV Golf. These guarantees were shattered when the former Open Champion went into exile on a new circuit last week. As a result, Stenson lost his Ryder Cup appointment.

On Thursday, Stenson did his best to stay away from those previous statements, claiming that it wasn’t his fault that he lost his captaincy. Stenson, who told the media at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster before the 3rd LIV Golf Invitational, revealed that he did not think the deleted Ryder Cup position would need to occur.

Stenson was one of the first names for LIV Golf to play at Saudi International in February. However, Stenson signed as the European captain of the 2023 Ryder Cup when Phil Mickelson‘s controversial aftermath of a Saudi-backed group seemed to hamper LIV Golf’s efforts. At the inaugural press conference in March, the appointment is that he will not participate in any departure tour.

Four months later, when Stenson is having his LIV golf debut in New Jersey this week, these words didn’t come true. When asked if he knew he would lose his captainship if he transferred to LIV, Stenson denied that responsibility and reiterated that the decision was made for him. When Stenson tried to explain his decision in a statement last week, he said he accepted the stripped post of Ryder Cup captain “for now.”

When asked if that meant Stenson was considering legal countermeasures against the decision, the Swede gave an indirect answer. “I don’t feel like I’ve given it up. I made every arrangement possible here to be able to fulfill my captain’s duties, and I’ve had great help here from LIV to be able to do that. And still, the decision was made that I was to be removed,” Henrik Stenson said. “I’m obviously disappointed over the situation. But it is what it is, and yeah, we move on from there now.”

“Yeah, there’s been a lot of speculation back and forth, and as I said, I am fully committed to the captaincy and to Ryder Cup Europe and the job at hand,” Stenson said. “So we’re going to keep busy with that and I’m going to do everything in my power to deliver a winning team in Rome.” When asked again in the press conference later, if the captaincy meant he had to give his word that he would not join LIV Golf, Stenson replied in the affirmative: “The captain does sign a contract.”

He further continued, “He’s the only one that does that. Players and vice captains don’t. But the captain has an agreement and those agreements are between Ryder Cup Europe and the captain, so I’m fully committed to my role as a captain and working hard towards the result we want in Rome.”
