As the Tour Championship concluded on Sunday, golfer Viktor Hovland took home the big prize. His dominating performance saw him win the Tour Championship and claim the title of FedEx Cup champion. The trophy was presented by Commissioner Jay Monahan, who did not receive a warm welcome from the crowd present at East Lake.
Monahan was present in Atlanta during the weekend. This was his first public appearance since the merger of golf was announced. As he spoke in front of the crowd, he was heavily booed by the audience. The booing continued as Monahan continued to talk to the presenter.
The 53-year-old has been under the wrath of fans since the shocking merger was announced. He was called out as a ‘hypocrite’ by the golfing community for agreeing on a deal with LIV Golf. His sudden medical leave made matters worse as he took a break after the announcement.
Monahan has been having a hard time getting the fans and players back in his good books. The Commissioner also admitted that he put the players on the back foot with the untimely announcement and is working to regain their trust.
How did Jay Monahan react to the crowd reception?
Jay Monahan is one of the biggest on the PGA Tour. He currently serves as the Commissioner of the circuit and works behind the scenes. His efforts have been previously questioned by the fans. However, since he announced the merger deal in June, the fans have completely turned their back on him. The top boss has received huge backlash on social media in the past few months.
Monahan probably knew the crowd would be hostile towards him. He did not get bothered by their booing and kept his cool during the final presentation. He would start off his statement by thanking the fans for their support of the PGA Tour. “I want to first start off by thanking all the great fans of the PGA Tour,” he said.
Monahan would later go on and congratulate Hovland for his performance throughout the season. While booing is not uncommon at golf events, the measure of boos at East Lake clearly showed the signs of a broken relationship between fans and Monahan.
In the past few weeks, he has once again claimed that the Tour is heading in the right direction. He remained confident that the deal with the PIF will go through in the upcoming weeks which will bring some exciting changes for golf.
