On Friday, PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan gave a major update regarding his future. The top official announced his return date following a month-long break due to a medical condition. He was last spotted during the drop of the shocking merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Mere days after this announcement, he took a break.
Monahan is now getting ready for his grand return. The PGA commissioner is set to rejoin his position on July 17th. The news regarding the merger was not well received by fans and even some players. He was heavily criticized and called out a ‘hypocrite‘ for this deal. The backlash got worse as he suddenly announced his break tenure.
In a letter released by the PGA Tour, Monahan thanked the tour for its leadership and support. Monahan added how sorry he was for not being able to be with them during the tough times. He mentioned how the whole saga from two years had taken a toll on him. “With the support of my family and thanks to the world class medical care, my health has improved drastically,” Monahan said in his letter.
The tour though never mentioned what the condition was. Monahan was earlier called on by the US Senate to appear before them and explain the merger. He later expressed health issues for his absence from the meeting.
Jay Monahan confident in future of golf regarding the PIF agreement
One common question that has been on the minds of everyone associated with golf has been the future. Once the current schedule of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf comes to an end, the changes are expected to kick in. What changes will be made remains to be seen, but PGA commissioner Jay Monahan is confident about the future and their agreement with the Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Monahan claims that over the last few years, the Tour went up against some of the biggest challenges. The top boss said that the organization and its members have been working hard to secure a stable future for the sport of golf. “With the framework agreement with the DP World Tour and PIF, we are on path to accomplish this goal,” he said in the letter.
He later gave an assurance to the players, the fans, and everyone connected to the tour that they will “continue to lead and shape the game for the future.” Many top players including the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm expressed their disappointment for being kept in the dark. The tour has now also addressed that the top players will be involved in the final decision matter.
