“Coolest thing he’d ever seen in golf,” John Daly once freaked out Tiger Woods

John Daly never fall shorts of ‘AMAZING’, but it’s only unimaginable how a frenetic shot by Daly could have shaken a young Tiger Woods, back in 1989 when Tiger was only 13 years of age, and John Daly still had two years to win the stunning PGA Championship.

The National Insurance Youth Golf Classic, hosted at the Texarkana Country Club had a rather blazing news headline in the Texarkana Gazette. The pros including David Ogrin were to participate, and Ogrin was later replaced by John Daly since he couldn’t make it. John was teamed up with the upcoming Tiger Woods up at 23, little did he know that this 13-year-old boy would be the biggest thing that ever happened to golf.

Daly, being the impassioned wit he is, had only a few titles to his name and wasn’t as well known hit a smashing shot, 220 yards five-iron hit throwing to ball to smithereens. “The ball came unwound,” Daly accepted reminiscing the comical moment and Tiger’s reaction.

Tiger Woods saw the coolest thing in golf at that moment

Tiger at once was startled by Daly’s vicious shot and his reaction just said it all. Seeing the ball bombed by Daly, Tiger kind of freaked out for his life. “I think that kind of freaked [Tiger] out. He thought it was the coolest thing he’d ever seen in golf, that’s what he told his mom and dad,” added Daly.

It was only the first time that Daly had met Tiger Woods’s parents too. He added that he had to check with the rules official following the bomb strike. “It just had the little rubber band sitting there in front of the green. I didn’t know what to do, can I play it?” added the smasher.

Woods was much younger, participating amongst an array of pros including David Duval and Justin Leonard. The event was a successful one, as Daly added, “Luckily I got to replace the ball. I only beat him by [two] shots that day — he was only like 13.” The humorous history remains one of the funniest moments as both John Daly and Tiger remember it for different reasons.
