While Team Europe continues to dominate the proceedings at the Ryder Cup, there has been some fight shown from Team USA at the end. As the two teams battle it out for the prestigious trophy, there has been some renewed rivalry between Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka. The LIV Golf star accused the Spanish golfer of acting like a child on Day 1. As a result, he has now hit back at this criticism.
Rahm, the current World No. 3, has been involved in some fierce battles with Koepka. The two renowned stars went face-to-face at the Augusta National during the Masters. An intense fight saw Jon Rahm overtake his rival near the end and claim the prestigious green jacket. Though Koepka moved on from that defeat, he would not hold back from taking aim at his Ryder Cup nemesis.
Jon Rahm has always been an animated character on The Greens. On several occasions, he could be heard venting out his frustrations. This time, the case was the opposite. He would celebrate wildly while winning both of his matches on Day 1. His overcelebration was something Koepka criticized as the Spaniard knocked on the door of the locker room with his golf club.
“I mean, I want to hit a board and pout just like Jon Rahm did. But, you know, it is what it is. Act like a child. But we’re adults. We move on,” the Smash GC captain said regarding Rahm. He now has his answer from the European golfer who said, “It is what it is” while adding his point in his defense.
Jon Rahm gives a cheeky response to Brooks Koepka and his strange comment on Day 1
Jon Rahm has enjoyed a fantastic season this year. After picking up wins on the PGA Tour events, he would shock the world by winning the Masters and upsetting Brooks Koepka in the process. Regular top-10 finishes have made him one of the most formidable opponents to go up against. He has also received some criticism from players and experts.
The Spanish golfer has now claimed that he has no issues with criticism and is not angry or upset with Koepka. Rahm started off by saying that he does not think of himself as a perfect role model or someone people look up to while playing golf. The 28-year-old shared that he is very happy to be who he is.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m very happy with who I am, and I needed to do that at that moment to let off some steam and play the hole I wanted to do,” he said at a press conference. Jon Rahm also mentioned that he does not know whether his actions were right or wrong and childish or not, but he did claim that he has done far worse things on the course.
At the end of Day 2, Team Europe established a 10.5-5.5. With the final day set to feature 12 single matches with all 24 players in action, the cup could be decided on individual brilliance. Rahm will go up against the guy who dethroned him from the World No.1 spot, Scottie Scheffler, as the duo kicks off an exciting and nerve-wracking final day.
