“The way I played over 2 years, it would be 6”: Jon Rahm jokingly finds a solution to remedy his 2021 Memorial Tournament

As the World no. 2 Jon Rahm begins his Memorial Tournament tour next week, he sure had hoped for the same format as the Tour Championship, which allows the a player begins with a multiple-stroke advantage. The tournament is scheduled to be held in Dublin Ohio.

Since 2019, the Tour Championship has put down a format which allowed the FedEx Cup leader receives a two-stroke lead over his nearest pursuer at the playoff finale. Rahm would love to have a six shot advantage over the other golfers. “The way I played there the last two years it should be at least six. Maybe more,” said Rahm slyly to golfdigest.com.

Jon Rahm was actually quite valid to put this number of 6 while he was speaking. Last year at the 2021 Memorial Tournament, Rahm was leading by 6 whole shots, before his lead quickly dissipated after completing his third round at Muirfield Village. Rahm had managed to finish the round with eight-under-par 64, creating two records:  the largest 54-hole lead and the 54-hole scoring record of 18-under 198.

“It’s hard to say that it was maybe the best I’ve played. I mean, the U.S. Open was really good, right?” Rahm said. “But, sure, I played some amazing golf that week at Muirfield Village. The hole looked like a bucket. Basically, I felt like anytime I was on the green, that ball was going in, and the ball striking was also unbelievable. So yeah, it’s gonna be tough to top those three days of golf.”

His luck was not to last for long though, as the minute he stepped off the field, he tested positive for Covid-19 and had to withdraw from the championship. Instead of winning the competition, Rahm was now reduced to wearing a mask and being escorted off the field. He now looks to find his redemption in 2022, and cheekily hopes that he will get the advantage this year.
