“Sorry and thanks!” Jordan Spieth gifts fan who helped him make the cut at the 2023 Players Championship
Jordan Spieth made a fan's day after the latter helped him make the cut at the 2023 Players championship through a miraculous comeback.
Jordan Spieth
Jordan Spieth could be considered to be quite the lucky golfer. His terrible week at the 2023 Players Championship saw him almost miss the cut. However, it was a fan who came to the rescue, and in the most unexpected way. Spieth had only one goal in mind-to not miss the cut at the Championship.
On his last hole, he was 5 over par in the round and very close to missing the cut. That was until, a fan saved him- literally. When he hit the ball, it seemed to go straight to the water and Spieth thought that it was all over for him. If the ball went into the water, it would not even be in play. However, the ball went into the fairway instead.
Just as Spieth was about to give up on the ball, it hit a fan. The ball then bounced off the leg of the fan and came on to the short grass. “Needing to probably birdie to make the cut, I can’t really birdie having to drop it over in the right rough over there and hitting my third,” Spieth said. “It would have been a one-in-a-million make.”
Free tickets and a signed flag for the fan who helped Jordan Spieth make the cut at the Players
Spieth managed to make an eagle on the last hole, and the fan is the only reason he is still in play at the Championship. “I got an extremely lucky break on 9 or I wouldn’t be playing the weekend,” said Spieth. “Trying to get that guy’s information and see literally whatever he wants this weekend. Because everything from here on out is because it hit him.”
Jordan Spieth did end up finding the fan, and he had a surprise to give him. The fan was a 23-year-old Marine, Matt from Colorado Springs. Matt received free tickets for the rest of the weekend, and also a flag signed by Spieth. “Sorry & thanks!” he wrote, offering an apology to the fan. Spieth ended up shooting a 3 over 75, which was not a great round for him.
TPC Sawgrass does not seem to be an ideal course for Jordan Spieth. The first time he participated in 2014, he finished tied for fourth place. Since then, he has missed the cut 5 times and has not finished better than 41. He is now 9 shots back of the leader going into the final round of the Players Championship.
The 2023 Players Championship has certainly been a bizarre one. Rory McIlroy has missed the cut, while Jon Rahm has retired due to illness. However, Scottie Scheffler has managed to make a fantastic comeback to take the lead going into the final round of the Players Championship.
