The LIV Golf series and the PGA Tour have managed to garner the opinions of those all over the world. From golfers to critics to audiences, everyone has had their say in the matter. While many support the PGA Tour, there are others who value the LIV Golf series and the changes it brings about. Recently, even some of the most loyal supporters of the PGA Tour like Rory McIlroy seemed to have a change of heart.
McIlroy thanked the LIV Series for bringing about changes in the system of the PGA Tour. These are changes that McIlroy thinks are required. Ahead of the 2023 Players Championship, Justin Thomas also gave his opinion about the LIV Series and the PGA Tour. Needless to say, he did not hold back at all.
“Well, we have an astronomically higher amount of quality players than they do in their events,” he said. “I think all of us have not been shy to say it that, you know, this is stuff that we’ve been trying to do and have worked on. Obviously got sped up a big amount due to what was going on in the outside.,” said Thomas.

Justin Thomas has vastly varying opinions from Rory McIlroy about the 2024 PGA Regulations change
“I don’t know, I mean if you’re just going to single out those events and have them only be the events we have, then, yeah, it’s extremely similar. But there’s a lot more going on over the course of an entire year on the PGA Tour than just the elevated events, I would say.” Thomas admitted that while the changes made by the PGA were very similar, the entire Tour did not depend upon those changes only.
Rory McIlroy however, was keen to say different. One of the harshest critics of the LIV Golf Series, it is interesting to think that McIlroy would take such a stance. However, sometimes one cannot avoid the truth. “I’m not going to sit here and lie; I think the emergence of LIV or the emergence of a competitor to the PGA Tour has benefited everyone that plays elite professional golf,” said McIlroy.
“I think when you’ve been the biggest golf league in the biggest market in the world for the last 60 years, there’s not a lot of incentive to innovate. This has caused a ton of innovation at the PGA Tour.” He said that the LIV Golf series had forced the PGA Tour to change its ‘antiquated system’ for the ‘betterment of professional golf’.
“LIV coming along, it’s definitely had a massive impact on the game but I think everyone who’s a professional golfer is going to benefit from it going forward.” The two opinions of Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy are vastly different. Maybe it depends on the product for some golfers, while for others it might be outcome. However, one thing that cannot be ignored anymore is the impact the LIV is making on the golf world.
