In the past few days, the name of veteran golfer Phil Mickelson has grabbed everyone’s attention. The ‘Lefty’ has been a highly dominant figure in the sport of golf. He though finds himself under the heat of several fans after word of his gambling addiction came out. On Monday, ex-USA Ryder Cup captain Lanny Wadkins blasted Mickelson and called him a “disappointing figure.”

Mickelson, 53, has not been shy of admitting his gambling demons. The release of the book by Billy Walters explained how the six-time major champion once placed a staggering $400,000 bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup. Wadkins captained the team in 1995 when Mickelson was still a young prospect in golf. Wadkins in an interview with Golf Channel did not hold back from attacking the LIV Golfer.

Mickelson has been widely criticized by Golf Channel analysts Eamon Lynch and Brandel Chamblee. He has also got into various spats on Twitter with the duo. Wadkins was asked by Lynch about his thoughts regarding the golfer. “I don’t know that there’s ever been a more disappointing figure in golf than Phil Mickelson,” Wadkins said. He would go on to add how the golfer was earlier a beloved figure among other competitors and fans.

In recent times, two things have been the most talked about topics in golf – the PGA-LIV golf merger and the Ryder Cup. The preparation for the prestigious team tournament between the US and Europe has been well and truly underway. This has also led to several talks about which players will be participating. Lanny Wadkins has claimed that Phil Mickelson could have been a two-time Ryder Cup captain had he behaved himself.

Wadkins stated how nothing looks good about Mickelson these days. He put forward how he thinks the veteran golfer (Mickelson) blew his chances of being a Ryder Cup captain. As per Wadkins, his poor attitude has led to him not being involved ever again. The 21-time PGA Tour winner further attacked the lefty for thinking he is bigger than the game itself.

Mickelson on his part had denied the story and asserted his stance that he never bet on the Ryder Cup. He stated how he would never undermine the “integrity of the game” by placing bets on the Ryder Cup. He was recently spotted having another slip-up during the LIV Golf Bedminster. After a great second-round showing, he blew his chances and is still on the hunt for his first LIV Golf title.
