Lee Trevino and Phil Mickelson have 12 Major Championships put together. The former golfer has a whopping 92 professional wins in his career and was referred to as ‘The Merry Mex’ and ‘SuperMex’. Phil Mickelson commented on Tom Watson ‘way of playing’ after the team USA lost Ryder Cup.

He blamed Tom Watson for using his methods causing the defeat. Many players had Watson’s back and defended him publicly. He targeted Mickelson by saying people with losing records should not comment on others.

“Tom Watson is a good friend of mine,” Lee Trevino said. “I’ve got a hell of a lot of respect for the guy, and I was really angry about the way they treated him [after his U.S. team was trounced at Gleneagles last fall].

“I don’t know what went on behind the scenes, but the players have to understand he worked his butt off for two years and all they did was show up and go play.”

What did Lee Trevino say about Phil Mickelson?

“If Phil Mickelson wants to say what he said, it’s up to him. I thought it would have come out a lot better from someone like Patrick Reed, who went 3-0-1, instead of a guy who has been a part of so many losing teams. If I had a losing record in the Ryder Cup, I’d keep my mouth shut,” added Trevino with respect to Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson’s concerns were genuine back in 2014 as Europe thrashed USA by 16.5 to 11.5. He indicated his strategies in 2008 Ryder Cup were effective and should not be changed. He spoke out that Watson denied his requests to play in the afternoon’s foursome by saying “Well, I think the way this golf course sets up, the four teams I put out there gives us the best chance.”

Watson said in response to Phil’s comments that he was a more mature person. He indicated that nothing would have served any purpose if he spoke right after Mickelson. The 8-time Major Champion believed his strength lies in the game.
