No golf fan can ever forget the 2019 Masters, where Tiger Woods grabbed his fifth Green Jacken, leaving him just one tournament behind Jack Nicklaus’s record six Masters wins. This was Woods’ fifteenth major he won by one stroke ahead of the three runners-up. Everyone, including commentator Jim Nantz, celebrated this moment of glory for the legend.

Popular soccer commentator from the UK, Clive Tyldesley, however, thinks that Nantz did not do enough justice to the moment when Woods grabbed his fifth green jacket victory. While Nantz called the moment Woods’s “return to glory,” Tydsley felt that more context was required to describe this moment adequately.

As reported by Golf WRX, Tyldesley was particularly annoyed when Nantz did not identify the people Tiger Woods was embracing and shaking hands with after the win. He says, “It’s been talked about in our community as to whether it was great commentary or slightly self-indulgent,” describing Nantz’s commentary for the Masters 2019.

Clive Tyldesley used to be one of the leading figures for World Cup broadcasts in the United Kingdom for ITV. He is also particularly popular amongst soccer fans for lending his voice for commentary to the massively popular FIFA video game franchise by EA Sports.

For Tyldesley, Natz should have described this iconic moment by Woods better. He felt that the commentator had enough time to think and analyze to give further context to the viewers. Tiger Woods was seen shaking hands with around 25 people after the win. Tyldesley comments, ““Tiger shook hands with about 25 people – and hugged several of them – between leaving the green and arriving at the scorers’ hut. Nantz didn’t identify any of them.

Further adding to this and comparing it with his commentary career, he shares the advice he received from his mentor Reg Gutteridge. Tyldesley says, “Reg used to say to me, with a great goal, you’ve got to do better than ‘oh amazing, incredible, fantastic.’ You’ve got to give it some context. It’s got to be tomorrow morning’s headline. That’s what I want to hear five seconds, ten seconds after the goal. Why is this goal so important?”

Clive Tyldesley thinks that Nantz not having enough words and not being able to sum up the moment was a “waste of a moment.” A good commentator, according to him, gives enough facts and context for people to get excited about such occasions for years to come. One of the most outstanding examples of such commentary would be Peter Drury’s monologue on Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford in the 2021 Premier League season.

Nevertheless, Clive Tyldesley clarifies that this is just his opinion, and some people consider Nantz’s stint one of the greatest pieces of sports commentary.
