“Dad, you were always there for me, drove me to be who I am, and gave me the genes, mind, heart, soul, and strength to achieve things I never expected myself and few have ever achieved. I am you in every way.”

In his explanation of his dad’s role in the Norman family, the former Australian golfer summarized how important he was to his family. In addition to his wife Toni, Merv Norman was survived by his son Greg, his daughter Janis, and two grandchildren.

“You were our patriarch,’ he wrote. We will meet again for me to fill you in with my final chapters of my life. I love you and miss you already.”

His father’s death comes at the end of a turbulent year for Greg Norman, who is currently CEO of LIV Golf. Since the inception of this controversial league – Norman has been seen as the biggest villain in this ongoing saga of PGA vs LIV.

Sometime ago Greg Norman revealed that all was not well at some point in time between him and his dad when he chose golf as a career over doing something in the world of business. However, the duo later patched up and kept all their differences aside.

“My dad never thought I’d be the golfer I became. He wanted me to be either in his engineering business or be a scholar or go on and do something else in the business world.”

“We had a little bit of angst about it all when I told him – ‘Hey, I’m going to turn professional and I’m going to be an assistant pro and in three years’ time I’m going to play the tour.

“He’s looking at me like, ‘Are you crazy, you’re not good enough to do that, nobody in our family has been a professional sportsman or woman.”

“At the end of the day, we kind of separated a little bit. It just created a little bit of tension in there. Now it’s totally different,” he added.
