World No.2 golfer Rory McIlroy is riding high with confidence at the moment. On Thursday, the Northern Irish star will make his first start at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Shane Lowry as they set to defend their titles in the only official team event of the PGA Tour.
Ahead of the 2025 Masters Tournament, the pressure was on the shoulders of McIlroy to deliver. With his two wins at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship, many believed that could be the year where he finally emerges victorious at the Augusta National.
After a disappointing end to the first round where he made 2 double bogeys, he bounced back into contention with scores of 66 on Friday and Saturday. He thus entered the final round with a 2-shot lead.
The Sunday at the Masters was anything but straightforward. There were several twists and turns with the leads changing hands several times. On the final hole, McIlroy missed a 5-foot par putt, which would have won him the tournament after 72 holes.
He eventually overcame Justin Rose in the first playoff hole and achieved his dream. His maiden victory at the Masters saw him complete the career grand slam and become just the 6th player to win all 4 major championships of golf.
Speaking during the Zurich Classic of New Orleans press conference, the now 5-time major champion seemed high in confidence and expressed that he can now use that experience from the final round to tackle his future problems on the golf course.
The whole day on Sunday at Augusta, I don’t think I’ll have to ever play a harder round of golf in my life… So I think to be able to get through that and produce the shots when I needed to, that obviously gives me confidence, and I can always draw back on that experience.
