“It’s silly season golf”: LIV Golf might be on Ernie Els’ list in career path except for one reservation

Ernie Els

The LIV Golf Series has certainly made quite the headlines recently, as several golfers make the switch to the breakaway Saudi backed series. Ernie Els understands the temptation of joining the series, especially for players at a certain age. With four major championship titles and 70+ wins worldwide, Els has his opinions about the LIV Series.

“From 45 to 50, you’re nowhere. You’re not the player you used to be. You can’t compete. It’s an awkward time,” he said to golf.com. While some of the notable names, like Bryson DeChambeau- 28, Taylor Gooch- 30, Abraham Ancer- 31, are in the prime of their career, most of the other LIV Golfers are not. Golfers Phil Mickelson- 52, Lee Westwood- 49, Pat Perez- 46, Ian Poulter- 46 are nearing the end of their golf lives, and are now playing maybe just for the paychecks.

With all golfers getting paid large amounts, and the purse for tournaments being $25 million it certainly is enticing for pros to go ahead and join the LIV series; Ernie Els seems to agree. “I would have said, ‘You’ve got to think about it,” Els said. “I understand that the guys go because of the money — it’s just a ridiculous amount — and you get to a certain point in your career, you have to consider it. But—,” and this issue seems to be a big one for the veteran.

“—it’s not golf as we know it anymore. It’s a very different product. If it was a 72-hole system, then you’d have to look at it,” Els said. “But it’s 54 holes, no cut, shotgun start. It feels like it’s silly season golf.” He told golfers to go ‘play and have fun’ for three four months, but then come and play true golf again.
