Following his RBC Heritage Triumph, Matt Fitzpatrick has expressed concern and frustration on slow play in golf. Fitzpatrick, who contested against the likes of Jordan Speith and Patrick Cantlay, has urged the golf governing bodies to take action against such a ‘ridiculous’ pace of play.
Fitzpatrick, currently ranked 8th in World Rankings, recently won his maiden non-major PGA Tour title on Sunday after beating Jordan Speith in a playoff. As pointed out by several fans, he was seen to be highly exasperated by Patrick Cantlay’s pace of play in the tournament.
However, the reigning US Open champion thinks that the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour would likely take any action, given their least amount of interest in increasing the pace of play. Fitzpatrick demands all the professional tournament rounds be completed within four hours.

Patrick Cantlay has been severely criticized, even by players appearing at the Masters, for his pace of play. Brooks Koepka, who finished second at Augusta Masters, has severely criticized the Cantlay and Jon Rahm group. He says, “Yeah, the group in front of us was brutally slow. Jon went to the bathroom like seven times during the round, and we were still waiting.”
Patrick Cantlay has also raised some crucial concerns regarding this similar pace of play issue. He says, “The problem is this conversation has gone on for years and years and years and no one ever done anything so I feel it’s almost a waste of time talking about it. I have strong opinions, but no-one’s going to do anything about it.”
Cantlay also adds, “If you’re in a three-ball, in my opinion you should be round in four hours, four and half absolute maximum – it’s a disgrace to get anywhere near that.
“Slow play is a huge issue. I was forcing myself the whole day [on Sunday] to walk as slow as possible and I was still fast, I was still ready. I think it’s a real issue, way more needs to be done.”
Fitzpatrick is known for being one of the quickest golfers on the field. He is hoping to claim another PGA Tour clown this weekend at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans.
