The British Open or simply called the Open, is one of the most prestigious events to participate in golf. The current schism between LIV Golf and PGA Tour has caused several LIV Golfers to face banishment from PGA-related events, including the threat to these players from participating in Majors and other prestigious tournaments such as the Ryder Cup.

However, Martin Slumbers, the chief executive of the R&A, believes there is no particular point in banning people from playing golf. This was mentioned last year during the 150th Open, wherein Slumbers said, “Let me be very clear, That’s (banning LIV Golfers) is not on our agenda.”

Slumbers later said during the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship that the R&A would go public in either January or February to announce their decision for LIV Golfers. However, one of the highlights from his statements was, “We are not going to betray 150 years of history and have the Open not be open.”

The LIV Golfers have pretty much all reasons to rejoice as the governing authorities of the British Open have allowed them to be part of the tournament. The Chief Executive of R&A, Martin Slumbers, believes banning players from the tournament does not indeed aspire to the 151-year history of the Open.

In his statement in October, when asked about allowing LIV players, Slumbers stated,  “But if you want a guide, go back to what I said in July. We’re not banning anyone. We are not going to betray 150 years of history and have the Open not be open.” Slumbers has very well kept in words, and now fans will get to witness some LIV Golf legends such as Phil Mickelson, Cam Smith, and Dustin Johnson featuring in the course.

The Open will be the third major event in Golf to allow LIV Golfers to participate, following suit with the US Open and the Masters. Speaking about the event, Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, the executive director of champions, says, “We have created an exciting schedule of events which takes in many regions around the world and provides the chance for golfers to earn a place in the Open at Royal Liverpool.”

Cole-Hamilton adds, “We are grateful to our colleagues at the professional tours for their support and look forward to seeing who emerges from each event to book a sought-after place in the Championship this year.”

The 151st Open will be held at Royal Liverpool from July 20-23, 2023.
