As the 2023 Ryder Cup continues to throw surprises, one shocking report about a rift in Team USA emerged. As per the reports, which were later called out as fake, Patrick Cantlay was unhappy with the structure of pay and his team’s performances. It also mentioned that he declined to wear the team hat during the tournament. The 31-year-old debunked this and explained his decision.
Cantlay had been involved in several controversies recently. He was accused of playing slow during events by other competitors. Cantlay being a member of the PGA Tour policy board also did not help his case. However, the eight-time PGA Tour winner has not taken these comments seriously and continued performing as he liked. Later, he would rectify the rumor that swirled around him.
The story would soon be termed “HatGate.” When asked about this, he gave a simple answer. “It just doesn’t fit,” Cantlay said while laughing for a bit. He continued, “It’s as simple as that. I didn’t wear it at Whistling Straits, cause the hat just doesn’t fit, so that’s really all it is.”
Whether this is actually the reason or not is something only Cantlay knows. However, the “HatGate” situation somehow gave the courage to Team USA as they fired back late on. Cantlay, also known by his nickname of “Patty Ice,” put the ball in at the end to give him and Wyndham Clark a victory over Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick.
