“Abused and endured a lot”: LIV Golf’s Patrick Reed files $750 MILLION defamation suit against Golf Channel and commentator after ‘infliction of severe damage’

The drama in the golf world does not seem to let up anytime soon, as LIV Golf’s Patrick Reed has now filed a $750 million defamation lawsuit against Golf Channel and commentators Brandel Chamblee. The 2018 Masters Champion has filed a lawsuit at the US district court for the southern district of Texas in Houston. The lawsuit filed by the lawyer claims that Patrick Reed has been defamed since he was 23-years-old by Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour.

The 30 page lawsuit also mentions the misreporting of information with falsity and/or a reckless disregard for truth. The lawsuit claims that Reed has been actively targeted to destroy his reputation, create hate and create a hostile work environment for him. According to the Guardian the lawsuit reads, “It is well-known on tour that Mr. Reed has been abused and endured more than any other golfer from fans or spectators who have been allowed to scream obscenities only to be glorified by NBC’s Golf Channel for doing so.”

The lawsuit particularly attacked Brandel Chamblee, who seems to have been targeting Reed and contributing to his defamation. “[Chamblee] has become Golf Channel’s primary mouthpiece and agent to push this defamatory agenda and inflict severe damage to Mr Reed, LIV, and other golfers signed with LIV,” the lawsuit read.

This lawsuit has been a long time coming for Chamblee after he accused Patrick Reed of cheating in 2020

In January of 2020, Reed’s lawyer sent a cease and desist letter demanding that the commentator not repeat accusations that Reed cheated during a tournament. In 2019, Reed was given a two stroke penalty for improving his lie in a bunker, which he claimed he did not do intentionally. Chamblee has been at it since then, accusing Reed constantly over the years. The matter only worsened when Reed defected to the LIV Series.

Chamblee’s remarks that Patrick Reed ‘would have no problem playing golf for Stalin, Hitler, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, and Vladimir Putin’ have also not sat well in the lawsuit. “This statement is false because Mr Reed never aligned himself with a ‘tyrannical, murderous leader. He is playing golf for LIV, which simply happens to be financed by the PIF,” read the lawsuit. Reed has said that these comments have negatively impacted him and has even lead to him being heckled at tournaments.
