It is hard to argue that the world of golf is not going through one of its most difficult phases. Almost a month ago, the community was left speechless when the PGA Tour announced a merger with LIV Golf. The relationship between the two tours had been poor and recently a leaked document showed their hatred towards one another. The PGA Tour has now rushed to file an “emergency motion” to seal up the documents.
Since the inauguration of LIV Golf, a war of words between the two circuits had followed. In a recently leaked document, various emails, discussion points with DP World Tour, points to protect themselves from the LIV league, talking points of Tiger Woods, and much more were released. The Tour now wants page 3 to 357 of this documents to be sealed for confidentiality.
This whole leak process is reported to have been an accident. However, the PGA Tour wants none of it and wants to shut up the documents before the situation gets even worse. The big talking point from this leaked information was the name of Tiger Woods. The golf great was said to appear before the Travelers Championship in 2022 and deliver a speech.
In the speech Woods was told to make remarks against the LIV league. “Tell the Saudis to go f*** themselves,” was mentioned in the documents. As soon as the documents became viral, there was a huge uproar on the internet. This led to Woods breaking his silence and claiming that he has never seen the documents and he did not attend the players meeting at the championship.
PGA Tour under immense pressure following merger with PIF
The PGA Tour is definitely feeling the pressure. The shock merger and the timing of the announcement did not help them. People started to criticize Commissioner Jay Monahan for their actions. However, these leaked documents now raise questions regarding their authenticity. Has the plan backfired on them?
This plethora of confidential information has left a mark on the PGA. The tour felt they had to do something to stop the breakaway LIV league in its track. These documents were filed in the 15th Judicial Circuit in Florida. The action was taken as a part of the plan by attorney Larry Klayman’s antitrust lawsuit involving the tour.
The importance of this memo released was clearly felt as Woods had to speak out in his defence. It is important to note that he has not made any comments or statements as of yet, regarding the whole merger thing. When will he make a public appearance and respond to this merge is still unknown.
Meanwhile, the top bosses, Greg Norman and Yasir Al-Rumayyan have denied to appear before the Senate to testify about the merger. The two cited work schedules for their failure to show up. Whereas Jay Monahan continues to take time off due to health conditions. These three were issued a summons by the US Senate to appear before them on July 11 to explain the merger.
