Ever since the inception of LIV events, the world of golf has been left divided. The breakaway league founded in 2021 has seen several disputes among professional golfers over its operation.
One of the most talked about topics has been whether LIV events should be eligible to receive Official Gold World Ranking Points. On Monday, a heated debate sparked between Phil Mickelson and Colt Knost regarding this matter.
As per the ongoing rules, players competing in LIV Golf events are deemed ineligible to receive OWGR points. This makes the golfers take a big hit in the current ranking system and damages their chances of getting an entry into major tournaments. No doubt the LIV tour has some of the best players ever seen but the differences in playing field and course make it harder to evaluate.
The war of words between the duo started when Knost, a former PGA Tour professional now turned CBS analyst replied to a comment. A user stated that there will soon be a time when the major championships will eventually adjust to give points to LIV members. Responding to that Knost wrote, “Serious question,”.
He would then go on to state the flip side of joining the LIV tour. The players already knew that they will not be receiving any points if they wish to take part in events of the Saudi-backed league. “Y’all are so upset about the OWGR, if you knew the criteria when you’re starting a tour why wouldn’t you just meet it,” he wrote.
Greg Norman has laugh on golf snub as Phil Mickelson and Colt Knost exchange words
Following these words from Knost, Phil Mickelson decided to join the matter and give his thoughts regarding it. “Colt. It is not our job. It is the OWGR’s job to rank ALL players in the world,” he replied to Knost. The CBS analyst quickly fired back and asked him why he never supported world ranking points when he initially joined LIV.
Mickelson wasted no time hitting back at Knost and mentioned that he does not require OWGR points and that he never cared for it in the first place. He would then go on to state some of his accomplishments.
The duo continued their social media spat. Knost would even go on to invite Mickelson onto his “Sub-Par” podcast which the latter denied. Knost would again invite him and threw in the name of Greg Norman for asking permission. He would again decline the offer. Norman, the CEO of LIV had a laugh at the current ranking system, His expectations of potential changes are likely to come sooner or later.
“The OWGR institution has hurt themselves, hurt their own credibility, hurt their product because they are not including the best of the best,” Norman referred to the cold shoulder they have faced. The OWGR is the official statistical measurement used for entry into major golf tournaments and championships.
