6x PGA Tour winner Rickie Fowler came into the social media spotlight after a video of him yelling at a bystander went viral. The incident took place during the third round of the Players Championship at the 16th hole. Fowler has recently struggled with his game, especially for making the cut this week at the $25 million event.
Unfortunately, Saturday failed to end on a happy note as the golfer made a double bogey on the hole after clearly being rattled by the fan altercation. To make matters worse, his second shot on par-5 landed on the water, forcing him to make his shot in hazard again.
As per reports from bystanders, the fan was asked by Fowler’s caddie Ricky Romano to put their phone on silent. However, the fan did not oblige resulting in a disturbance during the golfer’s shot. Fowler pointing his finger in the fan’s direction said,
You! What are you doing?Rickie Fowler on X.
Someone can be heard shouting, “Hell yeah, Rickie!!!” His caddie could also be heard saying, “Come on, I just said something.” On his sixth shot, the ball rolled past a few inches, landing in for a seven.
Rickie Fowler’s playoff form woes continue at TPC Sawgrass
Rickie Fowler barely made this week’s Players Championship cut at TPC Sawgrass. His form continues to deter him from getting crowned at honored PGA Tour events. His last victory came in 2023 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in July.
In seven appearances in tournaments so far, Fowler failed to make it into the top 30, resulting in concern and debate over his form. He missed cuts both at the American Express and WM Phoenix Open. Since his Mortgage Classic win, he has slipped ten spots in OWGR.
This month he paired up with Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler for the Players Championship. Fowler, a former Player Championship titleholder, tied for the 13th spot last year. Even with his last-place finish in the ongoing event, he is trying hard to maintain his spot and recover somehow from his woes.
