Rory McIlroy adds more spice to the ongoing Phil Mickelson’s $1 billion betting controversy, as drama reaches its peak on social media. McIlroy and Mickelson have often faced off in rival verbal and on-field controversies, and this time too it wasn’t any different.
McIlroy, participating in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, mocked Mickelson that this year he can fearlessly bet on the Ryder Cup team as he’s not going to be a part of it. His bold claim fired up social media as fans started to add spice to the drama.
Phil Mickelson got caught up in the latest betting rumor following Billy Walter’s mention of Lefty’s addiction in his upcoming book “Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk”. The book is supposed to be released on August 22, but an excerpt from the book noted the tale of Mickelson’s gambling life.
Rory McIlroy takes dig at LIV Golf rival Phil Mickelson on Ryder Cup betting rumor
According to various reports, Phil Mickelson indulged in over $1 billion in gambling in three decades. He and Billy Walter formed a 2-year partnership where the two addicts enjoyed their betting games. Mickelson is well-known for his addiction to various sports like baseball, and NFL, but Golf’s Ryder Cup was the first to be mentioned within these categories.
As per Walter, Mickelson asked him to bet $400k on the US Ryder Cup team in 2012. The Lefty himself was a part of the event and predicted his team to win the title. Although, Walter denied being part of this scheme as he feared to be another Pete Rose.
Pete Rose is quite a famous name in MLB, especially his tale of gambling on his own team and how he was removed from the HOF by the league. Hearing about all these gambling rumors, Rory McIlroy couldn’t help but take a jab at his LIV Golf rival.
Walter claimed that Mickelson asked him to put the wager on Team USA defeating Team Europe, but the former was successful in talking things out with him. Although, whether Lefty went to another gambling side to put his money’s worth is not known by Walter himself.
Phil Mickelson has denied the Ryder Cup claim stating that he would never do it with a sport he loves so much. Furthermore, he states that if he did that the integrity of the sport would have been damaged.
Regardless, it’s true that Mickelson had suffered from gambling habits and lost millions in the process over the years. He has sought professional help to get himself out of his bad habit and has since moved forward. Further details on the Lefty’s gambling life will be disclosed after the book is released on August 22.
