The recent PGA Tour meeting was held to discuss the future of professional golf, now that LIV Golf has made its debut and is causing a lot of controversy in the golf world. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Cameron Smith and Rickie Fowler were just some of the top 20 golfers in the world to attend the meeting that lasted over 3.5 hours. While most of the players have been hush-hush about the contents of the meeting Rory McIlroy did speak about Woods, and his impact in the meeting.

Woods has been the face of professional golf over the last few decades, and his incredible performances have led him to be one of the most respected of all time. His effect at the upcoming BMW Championships will also be a very impactful on the way golf will move forward. During the meeting too, it was quite clear who was incharge.

“I think it’s pretty apparent that whenever we all get in the room, there’s an alpha in there, and it’s not me,” McIlroy said according to Golf Week. “It’s impactful, and I think it shows how much he cares about the Tour,” said McIlroy. The way Woods held the meeting showed that he cared so much about the sport of golf.

“I think it shows how much he cares about the players that are coming through and are going to be the next generation. Like it or not, they can’t really sell Tiger Woods anymore. The Tour had an easy job for 20 years. They don’t have Tiger — yes, they’ve got a bunch of us and we’re all great players, but we’re not Tiger Woods,” said McIlroy praising the veteran golfer. McIlroy said that Woods was the hero that the sport had been looking up to, and his voice reached farther than anyone.

“I think he’s carried the Tour for a long, long time. I think we as players that were his contemporaries that were a little older than me but even the guys coming behind, we’ve all benefitted from that. But as I said, how can we keep benefiting from that going forward.” McIlroy said that they are moving into a different era, and that they had to think about things differently.
