The golfing season this year had plenty of twists, turns, and dramas. The 2023 Ryder Cup itself saw several such moments, such as the critical war of woods between Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, the breakdown of Scottie Scheffler, or the adrenaline rush of Shane Lowry. The most popular of them though was the matchup which involved Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay.
The two PGA Tour board policy members were facing each other with their playing partners during the last game on Day 2. As the Americans steered a comeback, these two stars were locked in an intense battle. Cantlay would emerge victorious with some help from his caddie Joe LaCava. This sparked a heated exchange between LaCava and McIlroy. The North Irish golfer has now spoken about his relationship with his fellow PGA Tour member.
McIlroy went on to state that the duo is not the closest of friends and labeled it as “average at best“. Following this incident, the chances are that it might have been damaged even further.
"My relationship with Cantlay is average at best. We don’t have a ton in common and see the world quite differently".
McIlroy though did mention that he has made up LaCava following the incident. However, the tensions between these two golfers still seem to be high and would require some sort of a miracle to change it.
Rory McIlroy wins DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai for fifth time
Winning a title with the help of someone’s else victory could be bittersweet. Rory McIlroy though will not mind as he won the DP World Tour’s season-long Race to Dubai title for a fifth time. The victory of Max Homa at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa secured the title on points for the four-time major champion.
European PGA Tour stars are allowed to compete in the DP World Tour. With his win at the Scottish Open, McIlroy set the stage for another title. The win of Homa saw him open a point gap of more than 2,000. With Jon Rahm far behind him and only 2,000 more points available, the race was decided giving the 34-year-old another piece of silverware.
McIlroy dominance in this event could be seen through stats. It took him just nine starts including all four major championships on the DP World Tour circuit this season to claim the crown. It will take some strong performances from players if they were to dethrone him from the top next season.
