On Monday, it was confirmed that currently ranked number 3 in World Ranking, Rory McIlroy will take part in the RBC Canadian Open this year. When he takes to the course he hopes to script history with the three-peat in his sight. His first win came back in 2019. With the event being canceled twice due to COVID-19, McIlroy defended his title last year.

A win this year will make just the fourth three-time champion and join an incredible list of Tommy Armour, Sam Snead, and Lee Trevino. The tournament is scheduled for June 6-11 at the Oakdale course in Toronto, Canada. To make a path to history, McIlroy will have to face some huge talents, including Matt Fitzpatrick, the winner of the RBC Heritage this year.

Currently ranked at sixth place in world rankings, Fitzpatrick mentioned it feels great to participate in this historic tournament. “The Canadian history is obviously very long with some fantastic winners. It would be great to be a part of it,” he said at the press conference. The Englishman was tied for the tenth previous year, around 10 shots behind McIlroy.

This year’s event features a severe amount of talent. Sam Burns, Cameron Young, Sahith Theegala, and Shane Lowry are a few to join Matt Fitzpatrick. The tournament is set to include multiple-time PGA Tour winners in the form of Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar. This year’s Canadian tournament is set to feature a large group of Canadian players.

Currently ranked number thirty, Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Svensson, Adam Haddwin, Nick Taylor, and fellow PGA tour members Michael Gligic and Taylor Pendrith will represent Canada at the event. “We’re all hopeful it’ll be one of us,” Hughes said at the press conference.

Rory McIlroy made an 8-under-62 in the final round last year. Due to his two birdies, he could finish 19-under, two shots ahead of his opponents Tony Finau and Justin Thomas. The Northern Irish star is now set to take part in the Wells Fargo Championship.

He decided to skip the last major event, the RBC Heritage. Meanwhile, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffer, currently ranked number 1 and 2, respectively, are skipping this tournament.

The Canadian Open is one of the most iconic golf tournaments. It was first hosted in 1904. Despite its long history, the last time a Canadian won the whole thing was in 1954 when Pat Fletcher did so. This could be the year when it changes.
