‘World No. 1’ up for grabs – Can Rory Mcllroy make the ladder up top

Rory Mcllroy was swinging glory until he was dethroned from the world no. 1 spot in July 2020. This week at the CJ Cup, Mcllroy is in full dominance to claim the top spot when the Official World Golf Rankings are released on Monday. However, as usual, there’s a catch to this as we know that ‘good things don’t come easy‘.

Rory’s performance at the current tournament will have the final say on whether or not the American will become the top dog in golf again. Another thing that will definitely be a massive obstacle in his journey to the top.

Rory Mcllroy who’s the defending champion was a bit behind early off in South Carolina as he started with a five-under-par 66 score. He’ll need a lot better than that if he has to make a serious dash toward the No.1 spot.

Mcllroy definitely would have the rankings angle at the back of his mind though he refused to comment on it outright. He says – “The ranking will just take care of itself if I do what I want to do. Ultimately, I just want to win this golf tournament. If I win the golf tournament, then everything will take care of itself. So, for me, tomorrow I need to go out there, sort of set myself a score that I want to shoot, try to do that.”

Rory needs a solo second at minimum to have a fair shot at dethroning Scottie Scheffler who himself would be hoping to secure his no.1 spot with his performance. So here’s the final math – Rory needs a second place at least and Scheffler would have to finish worse than solo 34th. “Again, focusing on that, hope that that ends up with a couple of things, a trophy, and getting back to the top of the world rankings” – quotes Mcllroy.

Rory Mcllroy who has occupied the top spot on eight previous occasions has history on its side. According to previous stats, Mcllroy has converted his 54-hole lead or similar into titles. Once again in a similar position, it looks like Rory might be well on his way up, becoming the World No. 1 spot for 9th time.
