The past week saw the 2023 edition of the Hero World Challenge take place. While the event marked the return of golf great Tiger Woods, there were some other big names battling it out as well. On Sunday, reigning World No.1 Scottie Scheffler took home another title as he won the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.
Scheffler has been on a roll since last season. The American golfer has recorded multiple wins and top-10 finishes since 2022. This triumph on Sunday was his third victory of the season. He would finish top of the leaderboard with a score of 20-under 268 and three strokes ahead of Sepp Straka.
One thing that had been troubling him was his putting. The six-time PGA Tour winner had been dealing with this problem for a while. He was able to conquer his woes during this event and breezed past his opponents. With the 2024 season near, this was a perfect time to put his putting issues to bed. Following his triumph, Scheffler claimed he was happy with his performance and pleased to see the putting results that he and his coach Phil Kenyon had been working on.
I'm very pleased with my game...I'm very pleased with how I putted, I feel like I rolled it solid. It's definitely nice to see some early results with the stuff that Phil and I have been working on.Scottie Scheffler on his performance through Sports Illustrated.
The fans on the other hand though seemed unimpressed by this. As this was an unofficial event with a no-cut rule, fans would compare this event with a regular event of LIV Golf.
Social media reaction towards Scottie Scheffler’s triumph at Hero World Challenge 2023
A major reason why the fans were looking forward to the Hero World Challenge was the return of Tiger Woods. The golf veteran had announced this event for his grand return from injury, which got the fans excited. Apart from this, several fans had previously voiced their displeasure regarding this event.
The Hero World Challenge is an unofficial event of the PGA Tour. So the win of the golfer does not get registered as a PGA Tour victory. The tournament also followed the no-cut rule which made it similar to LIV Golf events as per several fans.
Scottie Scheffler’s triumph in the Bahamas has left mixed reactions from social media users. While some cheered for him, some tried to downsize the tournament. One user took a shot at Scheffler and the event and wrote it was “A Mickey Mouse event “.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say on X:
He might have been trolled for this win but Scheffler will probably not mind it. Winning this event not only gave him some boost in his confidence but also handed him a sum of $1 million as prize money. He will now be hoping to defend this title next season and carry on the winning momentum to the new season in 2024.
