“I don’t think he should comment” Sergio Garcia lashes out at Fred Couples’ after snide remarks against LIV Golf players
Sergio Garcia was not impressed with Fred Couples' harsh words about LIV Golf Players, and he had a few words to share about it.
Sergio Garcia, Fred Couples
The LIV Golf series and the PGA Tour have had an uphill battle ever since the inception of the former. This time, it was Fred Couples that took a jibe at the defected golfers. Needless to say, the words were not taken kindly, and Sergio Garcia had quite a reply to them.
It was rather out of character when fellow Green jacket holder Fred Couples had quite the harsh words to say to Sergio Garcia. He called him a ‘clown’ for the way Garcia defected to the LIV Golf Series. All this happened during a guest speech he gave at the PGA Tour’s Champions event.
But that was not all. Couples also took shots at other LIV Golfers, including Phil Mickelson. He called Phil Mickelson a “nutbag”, and said “all these other clowns, like Sergio” left the PGA Tour and criticised it. The frustration was clear for Couples, who did not hold back on words that day.

However, Couples said that he was not mad at any of the players for leaving the PGA Tour. He understood why they made the switch to the LIV Series and did not hold any grudges against them. He was however, very unhappy about the fact that many of the golfers decided to ridicule the PGA Tour.
Garcia, who said that he could not wait to leave the Tour, expressed his disappointment for Fred Couples’ harsh words and jabs. “It’s what it is,” Garcia said. “It’s disappointing because I don’t know where he’s going with this. But it’s Freddy so he can say whatever he wants and then we can say whatever we want. I think at the end of the day his life is his life and my life in this case is my life.”
“So, I don’t think he should comment on what me or any of these other guys should have done because we didn’t tell him what he had to do. Even if I wasn’t [happy with joining LIV], it’s my problem, not his,” said Sergio Garcia truthfully and brutally. Both of them now face a painfully awkward meeting at the Champions dinner in the coming days.
However, things have been going well for Garcia. His team Fireballs GC took the team win at the 2023 LIV Golf Tuscon Event, taking home a whopping $3 million. Danny Lee took his first win in over 8 years, after an intense 4 man playoff, to win $4 million. The LIV Golf’s second season seems to be off with a great start!
