It seems the PGA-LIV merger has surely brought out some magical changes even before its finalization. The feud that started in 2022 with the Saudi-backed league’s inception, not only pulled PGA players into their team but also severed several friendship bonds between players.
One among them was PGA Tour and former World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and LIV Golfer Sergio Garcia. They were considered BFFs until LIV’s introduction destroyed it all. They even participated in interviews and online spat, bashing each other relentlessly.
But a recent miracle washed off all hard feelings from the two golfers. Garcia thanked his wife Angela Akins for giving him the initiative to text his old friend. Apparently, during the US Open, Angela greeted McIlroy and received a friendly text from him. Seeing McIroy’s positive message, Garcia texted him and had a long chat.

Sergio Garcia commented that the text “gave me the go ahead to reach out to him.” He admitted that he’s been thinking of contacting Rory McIlroy for some time but wasn’t totally sure how the latter would take it. Although Wyndham Clark took the US Open trophy home, Garcia “got my [his] friend back”.
Prior to the breakaway league chaos ensued, McIlroy attended Garcia’s wedding as his best groomsman. Unfortunately, things took a bitter turn shortly afterward. Following the shocking golf merger, Garcia noted, “I wish this would have happened a year and a half ago.”
Furthermore, Garcia said that he’s been trying to rekindle their friendship for quite some time, but situations didn’t favor any of them. Being the spokesperson for PGA, McIlroy was fully committed to the role, even if that meant severing old bonds.
Both players supported their own teams but the merger pact brought peace on the greens again. Garcia thanks the US Open stating it “was a great event for me.” Apart from playing well, he gained his BFF back, “a friend that I kind of felt like I lost in the last year or so.”
Following the latest Traveler Championship last weekend, Rory McIlroy tied up for 7th place. Both McIlroy and Sergio Garcia will be looking forward to their next tournament, and fans are hoping to see a friendly rivalry going on; just not a bitter one.
