LIV Golfers have become part of huge contention amongst several PGA loyalists in the golf community. Several top golfers including Tiger Woods and Rory Mcllroy are outright critics of those who have defected to the new rival league. Many in the PGA and DP World Tour are of the opinion that LIV Golfers should not be eligible to participate in the upcoming Ryder Cup tournament to be held in Rome, Italy.
Golfer Shane Lowry has been one of the critics of LIV Golfers for a long time now. When he grabbed his BMW PGA Championship victory last year September, he termed it as “One for the good guys.” The tournament featured around 18 LIV Golfers which seems to have infuriated Lowry. He had admitted that he could not stand the LIV players participating alongside him ahead of the Rolex Series at that time.
As it currently stands, all LIV players are eligible to qualify and play for Team Europe via the DP World Tour. However, American players stand suspended by the PGA Tour which gives them a very slim chance to stand in Team USA. Regarding this, Shane Lowry has taken quite a diplomatic stance.
Ahead of the Honda Classic starting this week, Lowry said to Sky Sports, “I can’t sit here and say whether I think they [LIV Golf members] should or shouldn’t [be allowed to feature at the Ryder Cup] because the way it is now, I could be on the team with one or two of them or multiple of them in September.”

Shane Lowry remains undecided on LIV players’ eligibility to join Team Europe in Ryder Cup 2023

Since 1993, Team Europe have held their dominance on their home soil and has remained undefeated over Team USA. Speaking about playing in the Ryder Cup, Lowry says, “Certainly one of my main goals for the season is to win the Ryder Cup, not only be a part of the team but win the tournament.”
Lowry has registered one point over the course of three matches in the Ryder Cup. He further adds, “I’ll be doing my best to make the team and if I don’t make it, I’ll be doing my best to put my best foot forward to get a pick off Luke (Donald). Hopefully, I can be there and hopefully add something to the team.”
Speaking of the LIV players being eligible for the Ryder Cup, there are several stalwarts such as Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, and the latest one to join the ranks, Thomas Pieters’ name popping up. Pieters recently joined LIV Golf as one of their newest signings in 2023.
Lowry adds, “I’m all about Team Europe and the Ryder Cup, and I’ll do everything in my power to be a part of something that will be special in September. Whether there is lads involved in it or not, if we’re standing there with the Ryder Cup trophy on Sunday, I’ll be a happy, happy man.”
It very much seems that Lowry has now changed his stance regarding the LIV players with such a soft stance. Earlier last year, Lowry was one of the most outright critics of the LIV golfers and had explicitly supported their banishment in the golf community. Now it is for time to tell whether the LIV golfers will eventually get their deserved place at the Ryder Cup.
