The Waste Management Phoenix Open 2024 is now in the history books. The 6th PGA Tour event of the year saw Nick Taylor take home the crown following an epic comeback win. During this tournament though, the name of Shane Lowry has caught the attention of the fans.
The WM Phoenix Open, played at the TPC Scottsdale is known for it’s atmosphere. This weekend, once again several fans showed up to watch the event live. Some though had to take a rain-check due to the weather conditions during Round 1 which saw the event being delayed. Lowry was later asked about whether he would take part in celebrations with the fans present to which he firmly said no.
The Irish golfer was spotted getting into conversations with some spectators and suggested some young people to either go home or find some local bars instead of hanging out in the rain. Golf Digest’ Christopher Powers would later share the 36-year-old’s answer to his X account and claimed that Lowry wanted the fans to leave the scene completely. Check it out below:
Lowry was not impressed with this and snapped back at the reporter. He claimed it was sarcasm and that his words were taken out of context.
It was 8 degrees, pissing rain and blowing 20 miles an hour...and I'm not sure if you've been to Ireland but it's called sarcasmShane Lowry responding to Christopher Powers on X.
Shane Lowry hoping to bounce back in 2024
The year 2023 was a difficult for Shane Lowry. Despite the success with Team Europe at the Ryder Cup, the season did not yield many positive results from him. He is now hoping to bounce back in 2024.
So far this year, Lowry has appeared in only three events on the PGA Tours. In his 2024 debut at the American Express Championship, he failed to make the cut, finishing 12-under. He though did manage to overcome this stumbling start as he made cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. Scores of 66, 73, 73 and 70 in this event saw him finish tied for 25th spot while being 6-under.
At the Phoenix Open, the golfer did start out strong and posted a score of 4-under 67 in the first round. Following this, he would soon find himself being two strokes behind the leader. However, things came crashing down in the final round as he finished 5-over 76.
This extra shots severely affected his ranking in the leaderboard and plummeted him down to tied for 60th spot in the event. It will now be interesting to see how he actually bounces back from this setbacks despite not playing that bad at all.
