Tiger Woods gets lampooned for the tampon controversy

Legends and icons are supposed to behave with great sensitivity and act as role models. One man who has crossed the lines of decency and is now hiding behind the cloak of playing a prankster is Tiger Woods. The golfing legend is famous for his skills as well as his history of indulging in acts that have earned him copious flak.

The latest, a tampon controversy, has come at the worst possible time. Tiger Woods has billions of fans but people have not forgotten his acts of being a serial cheat in his personal life. The man appears Teflon-coated, but the latest gaffe has shown him in poor light.

For someone who was out from the golf circuit after a major car crash in 2021, his return was slow and steady. People first thought he could never use the clubs like before. He proved detractors wrong and has slowly worked his way back. Then came the tampon prank, cheap and dirty. Tiger was quick to tender an apology but it has not gone down well.

Just imagine, at this stage in life, age 47, when he owns all records, and a legend status to boot, Tiger has hurt his own image. It seems like yesterday the Black American, famous for all the tricks in the golfing book, met with a major car accident.

To say that the accident or the incident generated interest would be putting it mildly. He was out for a long time and even said in an interview later in 2021 that golf would perhaps just be like a recreational sport for him.

To Tiger Woods‘ credit, he bounced back, true to his name. From a distance, golf looks lazy and not so hard on the body. This American has dealt with multiple injuries, knee, back, and more. Each time, he came back with full force, showing that he has the rare gift to bounce back from stages of a dead end.

For a man with riches, awards, and the stature of a king, one would expect him to be a role model. That is what legends are supposed to be, looked up to, in every way. However, the infamous tampon stuff where his prank effort was a disaster has caused him major embarrassment.

He attempted the prank on Justin Thomas at the Genesis Invitational last week. Since then, there has been a barrage of bouncers hurled at Tiger Woods.

It is not going to hurt the icon’s brand value but it certainly does show him in poor light, a cheap character. If women’s lib has descended on him with the force of a ton of bricks, Tiger Woods’ apology was hollow. There seemed nothing sincere about it.

Just imagine, someone devoid of sensitivity gets slammed by another legend from track and field, Michael Johnson. Johnson is usually not the one to get into the sermon mode. This time, the distinguished middle-distance runner who was a top class at his time in the Olympics has slammed Tiger, left, right, and center.

This is a good time to dissect why Tiger Woods lands in controversies like an amateur on the golf greens. With a beginner in golf, you can always grant him or her a “grace period” for maturing. Surely, at 47, Tiger Woods, who now watches his son Charlie also play serious golf, will be ruing his prank. The words used by social media are caustic, ripping apart a man who has won 15 Majors.

Did he need this bad publicity at all? Well, if you go by social media reactions, Tiger is lost in the woods. One cannot blame it on bad luck, like meeting with a car accident. This prank was by design, which has left a bad taste. How long it will take for him to come out of this storm, none knows.

The mood now is one of being unforgiving and ripping Tiger Woods on every social media platform. He is the punching bag, literally, for women’s groups. This time, it’s going to take more effort to come out of this crisis for America’s Black Legend. Being lampooned for the tampon stuff is justified.
