“A proper buzzkill”: Tiger Woods’ own website rips him apart after echoing with Matt Fitzpatrick’s opinions of the 150th Open

The recent 150th Open got off to a cracking start at the Old Course at St. Andrews. Some of the best golfers in the world are getting together to play 3 intense rounds of golf. However, the same cannot be said for 2 time winner Tiger Woods, who seemed to struggle a lot. On the very first day itself Tiger did not get off to a good start, which meant that he did not make the cut for the following rounds. Considering that it was one of the last Opens that he might possibly play, the disastrous performance did not sit well with a lot of people.

However, the more bizarre part came not from Tiger Woods getting criticised by other people, but instead from his very own website tigerwoods.com. The site gave a detailed explanation about Woods’ struggles at the Open, calling his performance ‘barely respectable’. “A proper buzzkill: Woods’ approach one-hopped into the burn guarding the front of the green, he blocked a four-footer for bogey, and this never really happened at all. Woods played his first seven holes in six over par to eject himself from relevance in his 22nd Open Championship start and needed to play his final 10 holes in one-under par to salvage a barely respectable six-over 78,” said the website written by Dan Rapaport.

Another aspect that really got on the nerves of many was the slow playing that went on in the grouping. The round took over 6 hours to complete- something that was unanticipated by everyone. “The threesome of Tiger Woods, Max Homa and Matt Fitzpatrick needed six hours and nine minutes to finish their rounds, and it had nothing to do with any of the three.” Many people thought that the pairing was rather incorrect, since the other two golfers with him, Max Homa and Matt Fitzpatrick, are rather young still.

“The Old Course’s firm conditions, criss-cross routing and adjacent-holes layout turned Thursday into a slog for virtually the entire field. It was a struggle for the healthy 26-year-olds; for a 46-year-old with a fused back and significant hardware holding his right leg together, being on your feet for that long is a worst-case scenario.” Matt Fitzpatrick echoed similar sentiment about the course earlier after the first round as well.
