Tiger Woods, 47, is one of the legends of golf and is known for winning 15 majors and 82 PGA tournaments. This year for the Genesis Invitational, Woods is the Tournament Host and has been paired with Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas. This is his first time playing competitively since the Open Championship in July 2022 at St Andrews.
Woods started scouring the headlines clean after he birdied his first and eighth holes at Riviera. He is tied for 27th in the tournament, with five shots off the lead jointly held by Max Homa and Keith Mitchell.
On his success after returning to playing competitively after eight months of absence, Woods has been quite confident not to give up. The five-time Green Jacket winner, who also mixed five birdies with three bogeys, says, “I was able to fight back and get it going. It was a nice finish.”
Why was Tiger Woods not playing competitive golf for eight months?
The Genesis Invitational 2023 at Riviera, Los Angeles, is the first PGA Tour event for Tiger Woods since the 2022 Open Championship. This will mark Woods’s return to the field after eight months of absence from playing golf competitively. Woods, however, did participate in some tournaments such as the PNC Championship, with his son Charlie.
Tiger Woods was involved in a significant car accident in 2021 which caused him lingering leg and back injuries. Furthermore, he was also found to have plantar fasciitis (pain on the bottom of the foot, around the heel and arch). This has severely affected his chances of playing competitive golf. However, Woods still seems to be pushing harder and going strong despite these severe injuries.
Several entities, including American sports expert Skip Bayless, have immensely appreciated Tiger Woods. He writes on Twitter, “Tiger Woods is the most extraordinary competitor this side of Michael Jordan. To just show up at age 47 after wrecking his body in a car crash, without playing any competitive golf, & birdie the last 3 holes in the cold at Riviera to contend, is impossibly great. Honor to watch.“
Besides Woods, his partner Rory Mcllroy is currently in a share of seventh after shooting one four-under 67. The third person paired alongside Woods and Mcllroy is Justin Thomas, who is tied for 14th on three under.
