It has been quite the event for Tom Hoge at the 2023 Players Championship. One of the most bizarre championships in ages, the Players is shaping up to be unexpected and seemingly very hard too. In the midst of chaos, Hoge has done it and created history, breaking the course record for the Players Championship.

He has had to cancel his flight twice because he just seems to be in luck after every round. Just when he thinks he won’t make it, Hoge pulls magic out of his golf bag and finds a way to keep on playing. After finishing with a 6 over during the first round, Hoge went and just booked a flight ticket.

Much to his surprise, he had to cancel it after he made the cut. Not knowing when the second round would happen, he rescheduled his flight. Soon after he went on to break the TPC Sawgrass course record, and had to cancel his flight once again. He shot an incredible under 62, to break the record in what seems to be a very tough championship.

“I felt like I made some really nice swings coming down the stretch [Friday] when I was right on the cut line … so I felt like my game was in good order, as silly as that is to say, that I could have missed the cut,” Hoge said. “But I was excited to get back out there once I did have a tee time.” Hoge might have started in the back 9, but ended up right at the top of the course record.

He shot not a single bogey, and instead shot 10 birdies. Those included the 15th, 16th and 18th notorious holes. Hoge’s record now puts him as the sole course record holder. Previously, the record was 63 and held by 9 players. “I didn’t even know it was a course record until after we got done in the scoring there,”  said Hoge.

“Today was going to be the day to do it if you were going to out here because it was soft with little wind, so you felt like you could make birdies and keep trying to make birdies. So, just felt fortunate and tried to take advantage of it the best I could.” It was an incredible moment for Hoge, who has sealed his name in the TPC Sawgrass history.

Hoge now also wants to eat a cheeseburger. Complaining about it, he said, “It’s actually my complaint here this week is the food is too healthy in player dining. I’m ready for a cheeseburger or something.” Hoge deserves that cheeseburger, especially after the incredible round he shot at the 2023 Players Championship.
