The legacy Tiger Woods has left on golf is unparalleled. The 47-year-old golf legend has set the standards that others are now trying to follow. In one such feat, young South Korean golfer Tom Kim has matched him. Following his successful defense of the Shriners Open title, Kim has become the youngest golfer since Woods to win three titles.
The 21-year-old has been one of the rising stars on the PGA Tour circuit. With the Fall Tour events in action, some of the big names have taken their leave. This has allowed Kim and others to shine and grab some much-needed momentum and confidence going forward. He would finish the event 20 under par with a score of 5-under 66 to win the event.
The final round saw a dozen players still having a chance to grab the title. After a close-fought battle, it all narrowed down to Kim and Adam Hadwin. Fortunately for Kim, he was able to hold off his Canadian counterpart and walk away with the crown with a one-stroke lead.
He beat Patrick Cantlay and Matt NeSmith by three strokes to claim this crown in October last year. This was his second triumph with the first one being the 2022 Wyndham Championship, a tournament he won by five strokes.
Tom Kim becomes youngest player to successfully defend PGA Tour title in over a century
While Tom Kim became the youngest player to claim three tour wins since Tiger Woods, he also did something Woods was unable to do. Kim has now also become the youngest player to successfully retain his title at a PGA Tour event in over 111 years.
As per golf writer Justin Ray, Kim is now the first player since John McDermott in 1912 to achieve this feat. McDermott would defend his US Open title in 1912 at the age of 20 years and 11 months. Kim’s defense comes at the age of 21 years and 3 months. The time difference between these two feats signifies its importance and status.
“It was probably the most emotional final round I’ve ever experienced win-wise the last year and a half,” Kim said after his triumph. He added how he feels he is not the youngest anymore and hopes that he can help some of the young guys by inspiring them with his play.
He is also the first golfer since Jim Furyk to go back-to-back at the Shriners Open. This victory also propelled Kim to 11th in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). The youngster would be hoping he can keep this momentum going as he continues to climb the golfing charts.
