“We were going back and forth”- Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith tied in 2022 PGA Tour at Detroit
Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith
Taylor Pendrith birdied four of the last five holes on Saturday to tie Tony Finau for the PGA Tour Rocket Mortgage Classic lead. Pendrith started the day with a one-shot lead on the US PGA Tour. Eight birdies helped him overcome two bogeys for a 6-under 66 at Detroit Golf Club. Cameron Young followed up his course-record 63 on Friday with a seven-under par 65 for 199.
Pendrith said his partnership with Finau was “fantastic” since they both made a bunch of birdies. “We were going back and forth. Tony bombs it off the tee and I hit it far as well, so it was great, kind of comparable games I guess, and we attacked it very well.” Finau, seeking his second championship in as many weeks after his victory in the 3M Open last Sunday, scored seven birdies, the first a 20-footer at the second hole. At 18-under after the third, seventh, and eighth holes, he added three more at the 10th, 14th, and 17th.

Finau missed a six-foot birdie putt on the last hole to hold a one-shot lead. Pendrith sank a 9-footer to seal a late rally that began with a 15-foot birdie at the 14th. He birdied 15th and 16th. Pendrith had a 6-foot birdie on the first and a 16-footer on the fourth. But bogeys at nine and 13 opened the way for Finau. Finau’s round was “nice.” “No bogeys up to this point on the scorecard in the competition, which is good. It’s a birdie-friendly course. You’ll get some looks, but not making any mistakes thus far is wonderful, and I guess that’s why I’m on top.”
Finau claimed he enjoyed Pendrith’s back-and-forth. “It was good to have that enthusiasm, and we’ll have it again tomorrow,” he remarked. “I can’t say we pulled away from the others — this is a course where someone can score 8-, 9-, or 10-under — but if we play well tomorrow, it could be a two-man race, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.” Young felt they’d be difficult to catch. He wanted to be closer. “Those guys are playing tremendous golf… tomorrow will be a chase.”
