The moving day of the Tour Championship saw significant changes. The final leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at East Lake was delayed by some time due to weather. This did not stop Viktor Hovland from continuing his march towards the trophy. The Norwegian fired a 4-under 66 on round three to take a massive lead of six strokes going into the final round.
Hovland has been impressive in the past few weeks. He recorded a memorable triumph at the BMW Championship last week. The strong finish in that tournament helped him start this event in second place. The 25-year-old now seems to be on the verge of running away with the title.
Hovland came into the third round tied for the lead with Collin Morikawa. The American was strong in the first two rounds and broke the record set by Tiger Woods for the lowest score after 36 holes at the Tour Championship. He claimed that the next two rounds would be tough, and so they proved to be for him. Morikawa was unable to replicate his heroics from the first two rounds.
Viktor Hovland standing on the verge of FedEx Cup glory
The FedEx Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf. It might not have the charm of the major championships and the designated events, but it does have its own aura. The performances of the players throughout the season are calculated and are important for their qualification. This year, several big names, including former winner Justin Thomas failed to make the cut for the event.
The tournament is then played over three different legs, with players getting cut after the first two. Viktor Hovland now stands on the verge of FedEx Cup glory. After an impressive third-round display, he has opened a huge gap between himself and other competitors.
A bogey-free first nine rounds and birdies on the last few holes put him in the driving seat. The six-time PGA Tour winner is now at 20-under for the tournament. Behind him in second place is Xander Schauffele at 14-under, six shots behind.
Barring a drastic collapse in the final round, Hovland is likely to take away the prize. The sport of golf has seen some epic comebacks in the past and Hovland would know it. With the form he is in, many are expecting an easy stroll for him towards the cup.
