WATCH- “This one’s on me”: Jordan Spieth’s caddie Michael Greller tries to talk him out of a risky shot at 2022 BMW Championship, but things go sideways
Jordan Spieth and Michael Greller discuss a tough shot
Michael Greller and Jordan Spieth recently had a heated debate about one particular shot. The 2022 BMW Championships reached the third and final round after getting off to a cracking start for the first two days. Names like Will Zalatoris and Adam Scott were consistently making the top spots on the ranking table as the Championship moves on to the final round. However an incident on the course with Jordan Spieth meant that he almost certainly lost the top spot after quite a debate with his caddie over a shot.
A long time caddie and friend of Jordan Spieth, Michael Greller has advised the golfer several times on the course in times of pressure. This was one such tussle, as Spieth took a risky approach shot from a bunker at Wilmington Country Club’s par-4 fifth. Spieth was in second place, just a shot behind Xander Schauffele, and so he was feeling quite confident in himself.
As Spieth went to take a shot, the microphone caught quite an interesting conversation between the caddie and the golfer. “I mean this is the same as that where I was yesterday,” Spieth said, trying to convince his caddie of the shot he was about to take. “So if I strike it well, it gets up and on the green.”
Jordan Spieth’s risk takes a turn for the worse, does not work out as he expected it to
“What’s wrong with hitting right here, having a wedge to 15 feet?” asked Spieth. The golfer’s main goal was to get the ball up and out of the bunker to end the hole on a good note. Spieth stood into the shot and analysed it. However, Greller seemed to be against Spieth making the shot, saying that it was more like a ‘cool Tuesday or Wednesday shot’. Watch their discussion and analysis below to know what actually happened.
“I don’t think….” started Greller, before he was interrupted by Speith, who replied with “I actually think I can do it. The downside is almost the same. This one is on me” Unfortunately for Spieth, he fatted his ball something fierce, his approach finding the middle of a green side pod. Spieth would walk away with double, which he thankfully covered up for with a bogey in the next round. However, moral of the story is that you should listen to caddies when they give you advise.
