While the amateurs do use an other color the professionals most often than not choose the whites. Is it because they aren’t allowed as per the rules or a personal choice.

So, the answer is rather the latter Golf being a sport all about consistency, golfers generally do not want to change things in their game. Moreover, the color white being the most common is accustomed to their eyes and any alterations may cause change of results.

One of the most common notions is that the golfers are simply not allowed to use the other colored balls which is entirely untrue. The players are allowed to use whichever balls they wish to as long as it comes under the ‘List of Conforming Balls’ issued by the sport’s governing bodies, the USGA and R&A.

However, the golfers cannot change the color in between the rounds, if the balls go missing if they are supposed to have a backup of the same color ready. But there remains no restriction on using a different colored ball in each round. Pros depend on the game for their living it’s vital they maximize their ability to see the flight and where their ball goes. Bubba Watson and Hale Irwin are examples of major champions who have used colored balls at times.

Interestingly, it wasn’t always the case, going back to the 17th century, the balls due to the substance they are made of were colored, which the golfers were not comfortable with, so they started painting them with the colour white and it soon became the trend that is still followed.
