The 2022 BMW Championship are off to a cracking start, as the intense competition sees 3 days of exceptional skill and talent. Day two of the Championship saw Adam Scott maintain a decisive lead, with several other players in the mix. However, it was not the best news for Will Zalatoris, who had to end his competition early.
Zalatoris just won his first PGA Tour title with an exceptional win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week. But it all did not go as smoothly as he would have wanted, as he faced a small niggle in his back during the fourth round of the Championship. This small issue seems to have now become a huge problem for the golfer.
Zalatoris’ manager Allen Hobbs confirmed that he had to retire after the injury fired up when he tweaked his lower back during a shot on the third hole. He hit his approach to the back of the green and gingerly walked to his ball. Zalatoris went on to address the ball, but looked in apparent discomfort, desperately trying to stretch out his back.
“I was not able to make a swing without pain”: Will Zalatoris faces immense pain in the middle of BMW Championships
Zalatoris later said that he was unable to even make a swing without facing severe discomfort. A doctor arrived on the scene, and spoke to the golfer. He then went over some stretching routines with Zalatoris after which Zalatoris shook hands with his playing partner and withdrew from the BMW Championships.
This is not the first time Zalatoris has retired from competition. He also went out once last year, when an injury forced him out of the Open Championship at Royal St George’s. The win last week at the St. Jude Championships saw Zalatoris shoot to the top of the FedEx rankings, but this withdrawal means that he will start at the bottom of the field next week. We hope to see Will Zalatoris recover and be back playing soon.
