As the preparation for the upcoming Ryder Cup commences, animosities have started to build up. The biennial tournament, which features Team USA against Team Europe, will take place next Friday. In these tournaments, the top players will battle it out for national/regional dominance. US Open winner Wyndham Clark has issued a challenge to Team Europe’s Rory McIlroy.
These two went head-to-head in June during the third major of the year. Clark would keep his composure and win the championship, finishing one stroke ahead of the four-time major champion. This led to huge criticism from fans regarding McIlroy, who trolled him for choking again.
There had also been questions regarding whether Clark cheated in the tournament to win. He claimed that he liked to think he was better than the Northern Irishman and hoped to prove it again. He will get the chance to do just that as he takes off for Rome in a few days’ time.
“I mean, I have the utmost respect for Rory, I mean, he’s one of our great ambassadors of the game, he’s obviously one of the best of all time and his career is still going,” Clark said at the start. “I have tons of respect for Rory. Because of that, I also want to beat him. I like to think I am better than him, and I want to prove that,” he further added while speaking with Golf Channel.
Rory McIlroy’s nemesis Grayson Murray set to make return to PGA Tour
Over the years, Rory McIlroy has established himself as one of the greats of the game. The four-time major winner has contributed a lot to the PGA Tour, both on and off the field. He has been involved in technical work behind the scenes and is one of the six player-directors on the tour policy board. This has led to him making a few enemies, and one of them, Grayson Murray, is now set to return to the circuit.
Murray came into the public eye for his violent actions at the course. Following his loss at the US Open in 2022, he was spotted breaking his club and venting out his frustrations. The tensions between him and McIlroy grew during a players meeting following the shocking PGA-LIV golf merger.
During the Canadian Open, the American golfer was angry with Commissioner Jay Monahan and slammed him. This escalated the tensions between them. “We don’t trust you, Jay – you lied to our face,” Murray said during the meeting. McIlroy was having none of this and yelled “Just play better”. Murray was in no mood to listen and yelled back “F*** off” to the player-director.
Murray has now earned back his Tour card following his impressive performances as of late. How he will react to the multi-time major champion the next time he sees him remains to be seen. Speaking of the merger, the talks are still ongoing and Monahan is confident that the deal will be reached by the end of the year.
