The golf merger between the renowned PGA Tour and rebel LIV Golf was a move that came in a flash. Following a two-year bickering and barking, the two decided to ceasefire and tone down the carnage. Several players especially the ones associated with PGA, were left stunned to the ground. Xander Schauffele was among them. He recalled having a good time with his pet dog when he found out about the merger.

The multi-time tour winner was asked about his initial reactions to the merger following the hearing in US Senate. He mentioned how he was sleeping in his bed with his French bulldog. “My wife woke me up,” he informed during a press-conference before the Scottish Open. The American international later went on to give clear details about the moment he found out about this shocking merger.

I was laying in my bed with my french bulldog. We were having a nice little canoodling session, and yeah, my wife woke me in a pitch black room and informed me of the news,” he explained. The 29-year-old recalled asking his partner about the source of the news. He was in treatment for a shock as he checked his phone. He would later go on to join the other players in raising the point of “trust” with Jay Monahan.

It is needless to say that the timing and manner of the announcement could have been better. This sudden release of information was probably too much for many to digest. For several PGA tour players, it felt like being stabbed in the back by Monahan. Things got worse for the PGA commissioner when he left his position for a few days due to medical reasons. Monahan’s leave and other moves have shaken the trust Xander Schauffele once had in him.

Schauffele cleared out how Monahan has many tough questions to answer in the upcoming days. The commissioner announced earlier this week about his return. “He had my trust. He has a lot less of it now. I don’t stand alone when I say that,” he said while mentioning how he does not trust people easily. This is likely to damage the relationship further between the duo.

Speaking on the US Senate hearing, Schauffele said that they (players) received a lengthy document with a link attached to it. He explained that he did click on it but after seeing the three-hour duration of it, he closed it and decided to go to sleep. For now, he has eyes thoroughly on defending his Scottish Open crown, after he won the tournament in 2022.
