The Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley said that golfer Phil Mickelson pulled out of the Masters, even though he was eligible to play. The three times Master champion informed Ridley in March via text message that he would not be playing at the tournament.
“I would like to say we did not disinvite Phil,” Ridley said during a news conference Wednesday to espn.in. “Phil is a three-time Masters champion and is invited in that category and many other categories; he’s the defending PGA champion.” Ridley said that Phil reached out to him via text, and said that he did not intend to play the Masters.

Ridley went on to say that, “That was by way of a text, and I thanked him for his courtesy in letting me know. I told him that we certainly appreciated that and, you know, told him that I was certainly willing to discuss that further with him if he’d like. He thanked me, and we had a very cordial exchange.”
Mickelson became the oldest major champion last year at the age of 50, after an unexpected victory at PGA Championship at Kiawah Island, South Carolina. He last played at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January and missed the cut. He hasn’t played a PGA in over two months now, and fans are waiting for him to come back to the course.
