Greg Olsen might not have retired as a legend like Tom Brady from the NFL, but he sure proved himself once he took the broadcasting mic in his hand at Fox Sports. As he steps down from the lead analyst position for Brady, he’s leaving with a Sports Emmy award.
On Tuesday, the top NFL commentator, Olsen won his first Emmy award for being “Outstanding Personality – Event Analyst category.” Considering his big demotion at Fox Sports, Olsen could potentially be the only sports media personality to win an Emmy and the demotion in the same year.
Olsen initially joined the second team with Kevin Burkhardt, who was later promoted to the first team after Joe Buck and Troy Aikman left Fox for ESPN and the responsibility to fill the top slot and cover the Super Bowl. Surprisingly, it turned out better than the network had hoped for, especially Olsen who impressed everyone with his broadcasting skills.
However, it couldn’t compensate for the lack of star power in the network and that’s why, Fox signed the lucrative $375 million deal with Brady and offered him the lead analyst position. Unfortunately, it led to Olsen’s demotion to second team and a significant salary reduction from $10 million to $3 million.
Nonetheless, Olsen will remain the best sports analyst of Fox as the Emmys believe by rewarding him above renowned names like Cris Collinsworth, Bill Raftery, John Smoltz, Tom Verducci, and Aikman, nominated in that category.
Fans react to Greg Olsen winning Sports Emmy award
As expected, fans once again voiced their displeasure at Olsen’s demotion especially since he is now an Emmy award-winning analyst but has to be part of the network’s team No. 2. Fans called it a Drew “Bledsoe treatment,” who was the former New England Patriots replaced by Brady, highlighting the GOAT is doing the same thing with Olsen now.
One fan wrote, “And still get the Bledsoe treatment from Brady lol,” while another wrote, “This is after he gets the boot from the big job thanks to Tom Brady.” Here are some of the fan reactions:
Fans argued that Brady would be in team No. 2 until he truly earned the lead analyst position, while some argued Olsen would be back in team No. 1 as the three-man crew. Perhaps, Brady might ace calling games just like he did in the NFL to earn the love and forgiveness of fans to replace Olsen.
